In 1909, Danish explorer Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen leads a mission to Shannon Island in East Greenland to retrieve records of a previous Danish mission. Despite initial setbacks and the loss of a crew member's toe to frostbite, Mikkelsen and a volunteer, an inexperienced engineer named Iver Iversen, continue on. Along the way, they lose their dogs and must resort to killing a polar bear for food. After three months, they discover the island of Cairn, where they find a record that disputes the existence of the Peary Channel and suggests that Greenland is a single island, thereby undermining American claims to the Arctic.


As they struggle to return home, Mikkelsen and Iversen build a second island and leave a record of their Danish mission. However, upon their return to Shannon Island, they find that the rest of the crew has returned home and left them stranded. Forced to spend two winters in a cabin with limited food and supplies, the two men begin to lose their minds. Mikkelsen, who is in love with a woman named Naja Holm, almost kills Iversen with a rifle. Eventually, they are rescued in 1912, and their evidence of the Danish mission leads the United States to recognize Greenland as belonging solely to Denmark. In the aftermath, Mikkelsen marries Naja, while Iversen never returns to the Arctic and the two men remain friends for the rest of their lives.
