Devotion (2021) Full Movie | M-Cinema24

Devotion is a historical drama film directed by J.D. Dillard and is based on Adam Makos’ book of the same name. The film tells the story of two U.S. Navy fighter pilots, Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, who risk their lives during the Korean War and become some of the Navy's most celebrated wingmen. The story explores the friendship and bond formed between the two pilots and the challenges they faced during the time, including racism and discrimination. The film is set in 1948, when Hudner arrives at the Naval Air Station Pensacola and is introduced to the complex world of naval aviation and the racial tensions that exist. He meets Brown, a groundbreaking Black naval pilot and Korean War hero, who is facing the challenges of being the Navy's first African-American aviator. Brown has experienced physical harm and several attempts on his life from his segregationist "comrades" in his early career and has developed a survival mechanism to cope with the psychological and physical toll of the racist attacks and it's clear throughout the film how that's affecting his character.

The film explores how Hudner and Brown form a bond through shared respect, and the evolution of their relationship. The movie explores how Hudner becomes more conscious of the challenges Brown faces and how he is determined to be an ally to him. As the two pilots fight to survive in the war and in the face of discrimination, they also strive to be the best wingmen they can be. The movie provides a nuanced and honest representation of the challenges they faced, the story is not sugarcoated, not a fantasy but it is a portrayal of a real-life moment in history.

The performances of Jonathan Majors as Jesse Brown and Glen Powell as Tom Hudner are commended by the critics for their authenticity, the way they bring the characters to life. The cinematography by Erik Messerschmidt is also praised, with an arresting fourth-wall-breaking mirror shot being particularly noted. However, the film has been criticized for its poor direction, poor costumes, and poor sets, and also the replica carrier built on land did not work as expected but it's a minor flaw in the bigger picture. Overall, the film is a powerful and moving story of heroism, friendship, and sacrifice, and it subverts the stereotypes of previous cinematic pairings between Black folks and white people during segregation. It is a compelling and thought-provoking film that will stay with you long after the end credits have rolled.
