Baby Ruby 2023 | M-cinema24
In "Baby Ruby," a new play directed by Bess Wohl, we follow the journey of Jo, a French lifestyle blogger who has just given birth to a baby. Living with her husband Spencer in upstate America, Jo has built a brand by curating her life as a stylish French woman in America. However, when a fan questions her about the absence of any baby-related content on her social media, it becomes clear that there's a expectation for lifestyle bloggers to monetize their personal lives and share everything about their journey.
As the play progresses, we learn that Jo is struggling with postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, and she begins to perceive her newborn baby, Ruby, as an angry, malevolent creature. Despite reassurances from her pediatrician and others that babies often cry, Jo can't shake the feeling that there's something else going on. She becomes paranoid, wondering if her husband and mother-in-law are in cahoots and if there is some sinister force at play.
The film uses close first-person perspectives to showcase Jo's increasing fear and confusion, as she begins to question reality and experiences hallucinations. The high-pitched melodramatic horror elements can become overwhelming and monotonous, but there are some truly unnerving moments, such as Jo's shadow on the wall and her reflection in the window.
