As the film progresses, viewers witness the heart-wrenching story of French's struggle to be heard and accepted. As a gay man, French is rejected not only by his mother but also by his peers and supervisors in the Marines. However, as he goes through rigorous military basic training, he finds an inner strength and resilience that propels him forward on a moving journey of self-exploration, helping him to realize he doesn’t have to change to be loved.

The Inspection has received glowing reviews from critics, with Variety calling it "one gay Black man’s way of showing how he not only survived [his] experience, but was strengthened by it." Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter describes it as "one of the most stirring portraits of queer Black masculinity since Moonlight."
